DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\nThe Make\, Integrate\, Explore (MIE) Lab provides opportunities for school students\, teachers\, parents and the community to learn and engage in STEM activities and experiences. \n\n\nRegister Now\nIn this practical\, hands-on workshop\, we teach you how to use a free online tool called Scratch and block-based coding to support your students to create a serious game to educate others. \nThe game we will design in the session is based on the Primary Connections\, Year 4 Biological Sciences unit called ‘Among the Gum Trees’. It could be utilised as an assessment task for students to demonstrate their understanding of the science concept as well as their coding and computational thinking skills. \nThese lessons and resources have been designed by teachers and used in schools for the past two years. While the session will be particularly useful for those planning to teach this unit of work\, the concepts may be adapted for other years and subjects. \nNo prior experience with coding is required and any educator with an interest in the topic is welcome. STA started Superstars of STEM to create a critical mass of celebrity Australian women who work as scientists and technologists – role models for young women and girls – and to work towards equal representation in the media of women and men working in all fields in STEM. \nIn 2022 our Superstars are on tour and coming to a campus location near you. DESCRIPTION:Maths Modelling challenge  \nEver wondered the maths behind how a pandemic spreads? Or the environmental impact of getting a lift to school? Or do you want to find out the link between climate change and your WhatsApp messages? \nPut your analytic brains to the test\, working in small groups students have four real world mathematics challenges to choose and work through. Celebrating mathematics and the spirit of competition\, this event aims to help high school students develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. \nThe challenge is open to year’s 7 – 12 with entries welcome from all teams across year levels. There are no minimum team requirements per school entry. Enter a class in all year levels or just one\, whatever works for you! Note that\, while in last year’s challenge year levels were restricted to one topic\, this year teams are free to choose from any of the four topics. SUMMARY:MIE Events Science and Engineering Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand places for the MIE Events Science and Engineering Challenge are now full! If you like information about our other STEM events please get in touch MIEEvents@usc.edu.au \n \nJoin us for the biggest MIE Event of the year! The Science and Engineering Challenge is a day-long competition designed to provide Year 10 (or Year 9) students with a positive experience of science and engineering. A maximum of 8 schools per day compete against each other at one central venue. \nEach school bring a team of between 16 and 32 students. Each school “team” is divided into 8 groups of 2 to 4 students. There are 8 activities to participate in. Each group will then do either one full- day activity\, or two half-day activities (i.e. one activity in the morning session\, and a different one in the afternoon session). Students are assigned a colour to identify which activity(s) they will do during the morning and afternoon sessions. \nStudents are awarded points for each activity and the school with the most cumulative points at the end of the day is declared the winner! SUMMARY:Dig Tech Skills Expo #2 - Fraser Coast Campus
DESCRIPTION:Aim: \nTo familiarise school teachers/educators and preservice teachers from across the SE QLD region with technologies and skills that may be used in the Digital Technologies curriculum. \nA range of 2 x workshops of 90mins each will be delivered by presenters from the University of the Sunshine Coast and Kaye North from Code Club Australia (formerly the STEM Champion for the North Coast Region) \nSession 1- 9am – 10:30am: \nDeveloping a unit of work and marking guide (Primary/Secondary) – In this session we will explore how to develop your own unit of work that incorporates all necessary components of the curriculum including the achievement standard\, content descriptors\, cross curriculum priorities\, general capabilities and expanding it into a series of lessons. We will then step through the 4C process to develop a matching marking guide. This workshop is great for anyone new to developing their own unit as well as for those who would like a refresher of the process. \nEarly Childhood coding and robotics (Prep – Year 3) – In this workshop you will learn about how to teach computational thinking by using coding and robotics as well as how robotics aligns to the Digital Technologies curriculum in Prep to Year 3. You will participate in unplugged activities before engaging in a rotation of activities using a range of robotics eg. Code-a-pillar\, Mouse bot\, Bee-Bot\, Blue-Bot\, Dash\, LEGO Spike Essential\, LEGO We Do. \nMicrodrones in the curriculum (Years 5 – 9) – Sarah Atkins from She Maps will run participants through a drone challenge using microdrones and will discuss the curriculum links between drones and the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies. \nSession 2 – 10:30am – 12noon: \nMake your classroom a Coding Club! (Primary/Secondary) – Code Club Australia has been supporting educators and volunteers for over 10 years to bring coding to every Aussie kid. Do you want to make coding fun and easy? Then come and see how Code Club can support you to do this. Code Club is completely free to all teachers and it provides you with over 100 coding projects with step by step instructions for kids. In this session we will look at who Code Club is and spend the session with hands on exploration of coding projects that are all curriculum aligned. Your path is your own whether you want to explore Scratch\, Python\, HTML\, app development or using Micro:Bits! Participants in this session will have a chance to win an Osmo for their classroom. \nStory Creation using Scratch Jnr (Prep – Year 3) – This is a hands-on workshop where you will use the app Scratch Jnr to creat simple algorithms and sequence a story into Scratch Jnr aligned with the Digital Technologies curriculum and the Digital Literacy General Capability. \n(Small groups of 20 max. Investigations will centre on big questions. \nDigital systems\, binary for numbers/text/colours (Years 5 – 8) – This workshop will focus on introducing binary concepts (numbers\, colours\, text) including practical activities for the classroom. The workshop assumes zero knowledge of the content by participants. \nMicro:bit for beginners (Years 3 – 8) – The BBC micro:bit introduces students to how software and hardware work together. It has an LED light display\, buttons\, sensors and many input/output features that\, when programmed\, provides a bridge between abstract concepts in Digital Technologies and tangible experiences. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to develop students’ growth mindset\, and develop your own confidence and skills in teaching about STEM careers and curriculum!\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nThe Make\, Integrate\, Explore (MIE) Lab provides opportunities for school students\, teachers\, parents and the community to learn and engage in STEM activities and experiences. \nLearn how to teach your students how to create a Serious Game using Scratch. \nThis professional development will focus on serious game design and no prior knowledge or training is necessary – we give you all the skills you need! \nThe learning focuses on developing a growth mindset in your students and is linked to the curriculum in Science\, Digital Technologies and Design and Technologies. The cost for this PD is $20 for teachers and is free for USC pre-service teachers and a light afternoon tea will be arranged. Please note that the starting time of 3pm applies to pre-service teachers who are invited to join us for a talk about our program\, what we do and how to get involved. Teachers from schools are welcome to attend the PD from 4pm – 6pm. \n  \nAbout Scratch PD \nIn our Year 4 sequence of lessons\, students design and program a serious game in Scratch\, to educate others about how living things depend on each other and the environment to survive. DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\nRoboCoast would like to invite you to take part in an exciting opportunity to develop student and teacher’s skills in Block coding LEGO EV3\, Spike Prime and mBot Ranger robots and Python coding with mBot2. This Immersion day is free for schools to attend and is aimed at school groups wishing to develop their robotics program or club. The event is open for students in Years 4 – 12 and schools may bring a maximum of 20 students in Years 4 – 6 for the Block coding session and 10 students in years 7-12 for the Python Coding session. \nAt the Immersion day\, students in the Block coding session will be working in teams of two and will need 1 x robot\, 1 x USB cable and 1 x laptop per team. In the Python session\, students will be working individually and will need 1 x mBot2 robot\, 1 x USB cable and 1 x laptop per student. If your school does not have all the equipment required\, we are able to bring equipment for you to loan for the day. During the event students will learn how to code their robots for a range of different challenges. \nImmersion Days are designed to train rookie teams up to a standard so that they can compete in the RoboRAVE Australia International competition at the USC stadium at Sippy Downs on Sunday 17th July 2022. DESCRIPTION:About this event\n\n\nRoboCoast would like to invite you to take part in an exciting opportunity to develop student and teacher’s skills in Block coding LEGO EV3\, Spike Prime and mBot Ranger robots and Python coding with mBot2. This Immersion day is free for schools to attend and is aimed at school groups wishing to develop their robotics program or club. The event is open for students in Years 4 – 12 and schools may bring a maximum of 20 students in Years 4 – 6 for the Block coding session and 10 students in years 7-12 for the Python Coding session. \nAt the Immersion day\, students in the Block coding session will be working in teams of two and will need 1 x robot\, 1 x USB cable and 1 x laptop per team. In the Python session\, students will be working individually and will need 1 x mBot2 robot\, 1 x USB cable and 1 x laptop per student. If your school does not have all the equipment required\, we are able to bring equipment for you to loan for the day. During the event students will learn how to code their robots for a range of different challenges. \nImmersion Days are designed to train rookie teams up to a standard so that they can compete in the RoboRAVE Australia International competition at the USC stadium at Sippy Downs on Sunday 17th July 2022. At the end of the day\, schools will be provided with a Sumo board and line follow mat to take back to their school to continue your robotics journey and prepare for competition.

See http://www.newcastle.edu.au/challenge for more information. \nWHEN?\nMonday\, 16 May\, 2022\nArrive at the venue no later than: 9:00 AM to start at: 9:25 AM\nThe event will finish at: 2:30 PM \nWHO?\nEight school “teams” compete against each other on the day. Each school brings a team of between 16 and 32 students in Year 10 (or Year 9). The school teams are split into 8 colour-coded groups of 2 to 4 students. SUMMARY:RoboCoast Teacher PD
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to learn more about robotics and coding\, and setting up robotics clubs? \n\nPrimary and Secondary teachers\, join us at the RoboCoast Teacher PD on Sunday May 15\, 8am – 3:30pm at Chancellor State College\, Secondary Campus. \nThe RoboCoast Teacher PD is a day which has been designed by teachers\, to cater for beginners through to advanced teachers of robotics. We focus on block coding and Python\, using LEGO Spike Prime\, EV3\, mBot Rangers and mBot2 (for Python Coding) in preparation for competition and setting up robotics clubs. \nA range of workshops will be run throughout the day and delivered by expert robotics teachers from the Sunshine Coast from both Primary and Secondary schools\, unless otherwise indicated. The workshops run over 3 sessions of 90 mins each and are capped at 20 teachers per workshop. Teachers\, educators and preservice teachers welcome to attend. At the end of the day\, schools will be provided with a Sumo board and line follow mat to take back to their school to continue your robotics journey and prepare for competition. \nThe day has been hosted by Kath Facer from Cooran State School and their tuckshop will be open. \n9:30am – Welcome and house keeping \n9:45am –  Identifying ports and initial coding \n10:30am – Morning tea (BYO or school tuckshop will be open) \n11:00am – In teams: How to drive your robot and use its sensors \n11:30am – Inquiry problem – Design and program for robotics comp \n12:30pm – Lunch (BYO or school tuckshop will be open) \n1:00pm –RoboSumo competition – round robin \n2:00pm – Awards\, thanks and further information about robotics \nDepartment of Health Covid safety measures will be implemented at this event.
