SUMMARY:NOBURN - Citizen Science Community Event
DESCRIPTION:NOBURN “National Bushfire Resilience Network” – a citizen science project involving communities in data collection and predictive modelling \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nNOBURN is an exciting national citizen science project that is helping us learn more about what is driving bushfires so we can predict these factors. Around the country\, NOBURN allows everyone who wants to\, to record evidence of possible forest danger with nothing more than a smartphone. \nThe NOBURN Research Team\, in partnership with MIE Lab\, Noosa Shire Council and Noosa & District Landcare\, are keen to invite you to be the first users of the NOBURN Citizen Science App. As a national citizen science project\, we are seeking regional Champions in the Noosa Council who want to trial the app\, and be part of the national roll-out program in weeks following the NOBURN Citizen Science Community Event. \nBy downloading the NOBURN app on your smartphone\, you can become a citizen scientist by simply taking photos and telling us more about the forest locations you see and the experience you had. You’ll become an active participant in our research and together\, we can improve our readiness and resilience. \nBy recording forest evidence with the NOBURN app\, you and anyone in Australia can provide a unique\, time-stamped and geo-referenced data recording\, allowing scientists to understand bushfires better. You can\, with NOBURN\, directly assist with Australia’s disaster resilience\, preparedness and response to bushfires. You will be part of the solution! \n  \n2:00pm – Arrival and welcome \n2:40pm – Meet the NOBURN and MIE Lab Teams \n3:00pm – NOBURN demo and practice \n4:00pm – Refreshing wind-down and becoming a NOBURN Champion \n5:00pm – Close \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\nTwitter.com/NOBURNUniSC\nLinkedin.com/company/noburn/\nhttp://www.facebook.com/NOBURNUniSC

SUMMARY:Queensland Mental Health Week 2022
DESCRIPTION:Online Presentation: “The connected brain: brain health and the impact of stress” – with Dr Kathryn Broadhouse About this event Queensland Mental Health Week (QMHW) encourages all of us to think about our mental health and wellbeing\, regardless of whether we may have a lived experience of mental illness or not\, and encourages help seeking behaviours\, when needed. Dr Kathryn Broadhouse researcher and physicist\, will be live online\, talking about brain health and the impact of stress. We will take a brief dive into the world of neuroscience and neuro-imaging to understand: 1. How our brains learn new things 2. How stress impacts brain function and the way we learn and 3. How we can build resilience against stress. This talk will show us how researchers use neuro-imaging to investigate brain health and how we can all stay mentally healthy.   \n\nHow to get Involved! \n\n\n\nMIE Lab will be holding an online presentation via Zoom with Dr. Kathryn Broadhouse\, Monday 10 October 7pm (AEST) \n\n\n\nTo Register: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/413894478527 \n\n

It could be utilised as an assessment task for students to demonstrate their understanding of the science concept as well as their coding and computational thinking skills. \nThese lessons and resources have been designed by teachers and used in schools for the past two years. While the session will be particularly useful for those planning to teach this unit of work\, the concepts may be adapted for other years and subjects. \nNo prior experience with coding is required and any educator with an interest in the topic is welcome. Just bring along your laptop with Scratch downloaded. \nWhat will I learn? \n• Practical experience and confidence delivering STEM lessons in schools \n• How to design and code serious games using Scratch \n• How to use serious games as an educational tool in a classroom setting \n• To motivate school students to have positive attitudes toward higher education \n  \nWhat do I need to bring? \n• Laptop – (prior to this event please download the Scratch app here: https://scratch.mit.edu/download) \n  \nThis session provides you the opportunity to learn more about our program and what we do in the community. SUMMARY:National Science Week 2022
DESCRIPTION:Engage with this year’s National Science Week! \nThe theme? Glass: more than meets the eye. Join in with this Australia wide event! \nAge \nYear 10 \nAbout \nThe school theme for National Science Week in 2022 is Glass: More than meets the eye. It is based on the UN International Year of Glass. It will celebrate the many roles that glass plays in our lives – from phone screens to optical fibre to glassware in labs – plus investigating glass as a part of our sustainable future. The uses for and intrinsic nature of glass in science make it a suitable topic for investigation across all strands of science education. \nWe offer a curriculum linked\, interactive experience engaging year 10 students in quantum physics problem. Within this students create a model to explain why glass is “invisible” to visible light. \nFor more information on National Science Week\, please visit their website here. \n\n\nRegistrations are now open \nAccess Resources and Register Here

SUMMARY:Maths Modelling Challenge 2022
DESCRIPTION:Maths Modelling challenge  \nEver wondered the maths behind how a pandemic spreads? Or the environmental impact of getting a lift to school? Or do you want to find out the link between climate change and your WhatsApp messages? \nPut your analytic brains to the test\, working in small groups students have four real world mathematics challenges to choose and work through. Celebrating mathematics and the spirit of competition\, this event aims to help high school students develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. \nThe challenge is open to year’s 7 – 12 with entries welcome from all teams across year levels. There are no minimum team requirements per school entry. Enter a class in all year levels or just one\, whatever works for you! Note that\, while in last year’s challenge year levels were restricted to one topic\, this year teams are free to choose from any of the four topics. If your teams participated in last year’s challenge\, feel free to choose another topic this year! \nJoin in and explore how mathematical modelling can show us not only how the world around us works – but how it can help to change it. \nSubmissions are online and will be judged by UniSC academics with prizes then awarded. \nRegistrations are open now!\nNEW Closing Date for submissions is Friday 2nd Sept\, 3PM \nPrize announced by 16th September \nDownload Resources Here
