Sustainable Neighbourhoods

The Sustainable Neighbourhoods program is new in 2022 and ready for delivery to Year 8 students now.

In this sequence of lessons, students will use critical and creative thinking in relation to current and future management and planning of Australia’s cities and regional urban centres. Students will use serious game technologies to develop their own 20 min city using the four pillars of Sustainable Neighbourhoods.

This learning is linked to the Year 8 Australian Curriculum: Geography and Design and Technologies learning areas. During the lessons students will explore the four pillars of Sustainable Neighbourhoods: Society Equity, Environmental Sensitivity, Economic Viability, and Public Transport & Active Mobility. They will also learn about United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 11 – Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. They will also learn about SDG #3 – Good Health & Well-being, SDG #6 Clean water and Sanitation, SDG # 7 Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG #8 Decent Work & Economic Growth and SDG #13 Climate Action as they relate to Urban Design and Town Planning.

The Year 8 lessons and resources provide students with opportunities to use a serious game, develop their critical and creative thinking skills and deepen their understanding of STEM careers.
